Hajj is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for every able Muslim. Prepare physically, spiritually and practically with these 10 must-know tips before your sacred journey.
1. Start Your Physical Preparation Early
Hajj involves significant walking — often 10 to 15 kilometres per day on some days. Begin daily walking exercise at least two to three months before departure. Build your stamina gradually, starting with 20 minutes of brisk walking and increasing to one hour. This will make Tawaf, Sa'i and the walk to Muzdalifah much more manageable.
2. Understand All the Rites in Advance
Study the Manasik al-Hajj (rites of Hajj) thoroughly before you travel. Know the significance and procedure of each rite: Ihram, Tawaf al-Qudum, wuqoof at Arafat, Muzdalifah, Mina (Rami, Hady, Taqsir), Tawaf al-Ifadah, and Sa'i. Al-Hasnain Tourizm organises pre-departure training sessions for all our group pilgrims.
3. Keep Your Documents Safe
Always carry photocopies of your passport, visa, and Hajj group ID card separately from the originals. Save scanned copies to your email and phone. Memorise or keep noted your hotel address in Makkah and Madinah and your group leader's contact number.
4. Pack Smart — Less is More
The Hajj packing list should focus on essentials: Ihram garments (2 sets for men), unstitched white cloth, comfortable walking sandals, unscented toiletries, basic medicines, a small prayer mat, and a money belt. Avoid overpacking — you'll be moving between Makkah, Arafat, Muzdalifah, Mina and Madinah.
5. Manage Your Health Proactively
Visit your doctor before departure and take any recommended vaccines (Meningitis ACWY is mandatory for Saudi Arabia). Carry sufficient prescription medicines. Stay hydrated at all times — the heat in Makkah can reach 45°C in summer. Al-Hasnain provides Zamzam water and Indian meals to keep pilgrims nourished.
6 to 10: Additional Tips
6. Learn basic Arabic greetings and emergency phrases. 7. Set clear spiritual intentions (niyyah) and keep a personal dua list. 8. Stay calm and patient — Hajj is a test of character. 9. Follow your group leader and do not wander alone, especially in Mina. 10. Maximise your time at the Haram — every moment in sight of the Kaaba is precious.
